AN IDEA TO SAVE YOU SOME MONEY AND HASSELS!
When a tenant vacates a unit, we strongly recommend that you have the exterior door locks rekeyed. All of my unit’s doors have a door knob and a deadbolt lock and over half have security doors on the front entry also. To rekey four or six locks is pretty expensive. Then I discovered a property that didn’t have a keyed door knob. The security was provided by the deadbolt locks only. When a tenant moved out, I replaced the door knobs. This meant I only had to rekey 2 or 3 locks instead. Make sure the deadbolt has a thumb latch on the inside. You don’t want a resident to have to look for or fumble with a key to exit. Also, this type of deadbolt reduces your “I’m Locked Out!” calls because they have to use the key to lock the door when they leave.
Landlords have enough worries. You shouldn’t worry about whether there might be an unauthorized key circulating somewhere, and you won’t be if you simply change the locks whenever a tenant moves out.
